Canada Invests in Reliable, Affordable and Clean Electricity in Niagara

At this pivotal moment, Canada is choosing to build projects that will make us a clean energy superpower. Faced with global volatility and a changing climate, we must strengthen our economy while protecting our environment, all while bringing down costs for Canadians – including the price of power. This means that we must grow and modernize our electricity grid infrastructure to ensure that more Canadians can access reliable and affordable electricity.

Today, Chris Bittle, Member of Parliament for St. Catherines, on behalf of the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced a $2.7 million investment through Natural Resources Canada’s Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREPs) for Niagara Peninsula Energy Incorporated’s new smart grid equipment. This project will:

  • Deploy automated reclosers at identified sites in the Niagara area.
  • Configure and deploy fault location, isolation and service restoration software to increase reliability in the region.
  • Develop and implement interfaces to bridge outage management systems (OMS) and supervisory control and data acquisition systems to deploy new smart grid devices and software.

Today’s investment will modernize how electricity is managed and distributed in Niagara and St. Catherines, helping reduce emissions and preparing the region to meet rising electricity demand as we work to double our electricity grid by 2050 under our Powering Canada Strong, our government’s new plan to build a strong, reliable, affordable electricity grid.
